Supporting Economic Security in Greater Richmond and Charlottesville Areas

The Foundation for Financial Independence was established to expand access to financial literacy and wealth-building resources for individuals in historically excluded communities. Guided by our Heritage beliefs, we are committed to cultivating a future where education, employment, and asset-building opportunities are accessible to all. Through philanthropic contributions, the members of our Selection Committee carefully select local organizations that uplift our community and align with our mission to support annually.
This year, we are proud to grant $17,500 each to selected awardees, Piedmont Housing Alliance and Neighborhood Resource Center, two organizations dedicated to strengthening economic mobility and demanding resource accessibility.
Our first awardee, The Piedmont Housing Alliance, creates affordable housing opportunities while improving the community through educational initiatives, lending resources, and equitable development. Their Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) empowers residents with one-on-one financial coaching, equipping them with the resources to build long-term wealth and financial stability. Additionally, Piedmont Housing Alliance offers free community financial literacy classes and is an approved provider for the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s First-Time Homebuyer Education program, which is essential for accessing homebuying assistance.
Our second awardee, the Neighborhood Resource Center, is a non-profit organization educational, cultural, and nutrition center, working to bridge the gaps and enrich low-income and low-educational divestments for individuals and families in Greater Fulton and East Henrico County. For over 20 years, devoted volunteers from both in the neighborhood and outside, have served the community by organizing core programs that provide diverse resources. One of their most meaningful initiatives is the NRC Works program, which offers financial education and support services to promote economic equity in the community. This is complemented by their Barrier Removal Program—a six-month initiative that provides participants with recurring grants to help cover essentials like utilities, rent, car payments, or other outstanding debts. They also offer access to food pantries, free tax preparation, community gardening, youth after-school and summer programs, nutrition education for all ages, career development opportunities, and a wide range of additional services that strengthen and support the community.
Since the Foundation’s inception in 2021, we have proudly invested $85,000 in initiatives that break down barriers to financial education and opportunity, encouraging a community where everyone has the tools to achieve lasting stability and success. As envisioned through the Foundation for Financial Independence, we remain committed to supporting organizations that provide individuals with the knowledge and resources to take control of their financial future. Because of this commitment, we congratulate and acknowledge Piedmont Housing Alliance and Neighborhood Resource Center on their unwavering dedication and ongoing contributions.
